Club History
Mandurah Legends came into being during February 2009 as an alternative venue for people travelling to the Coolbellup Hotel. At that time the Coolbellup Hotel was the home of WA Legends and there was difficulty accommodating the number of teams which sometimes meant lengthy waits between games. Initially, there was some thought that Mandurah would be an overflow venue. However, the Mandurah players decided to form its own club and its first meeting was held on the 15th February 2009 where the initial committee was selected. A number of the original players and committee members are still active today and Kaylene Cameron (life member) continues to serve on the current committee. Our other life members, Petar Govorko and Cec Hatchett, as the initial President and Vice-President were also instrumental in establishing Mandurah Legends and currently sponsor our mystery peg awards.
Mandurah Legends first venue was the old Mandurah Bowling Club with 8 boards and around 55 members. Due to the low numbers of players the initial format of nominated teams was unsuccessful and after a few months it was decided to move to the Bunbury approach of deciding game formats on the day based on numbers. Whilst at the old Bowling Club, Dawn and Peter Anderson ran the kitchen on behalf of Mandurah Legends. We initially offered a sausage sizzle and when the kitchen became available then toasted sandwiches, pies, hot chips and deserts were offered. This was later taken over by Janean Gambie. We moved to the new Mandurah Bowling and Recreation Club after it was built and then after about 8 years moved to the Silver Sands Hotel.
Three years ago (2021) we moved to the Halls Head Bowling & Recreation Club as it provided a more relaxed atmosphere for our players. We continue to play at that venue with games held once a month, including three Club Championship Events. Normal club days are scheduled as a mix of different types of events (e.g. teams, mixed or normal doubles) with a draw system to decide partners – at times the format may be varied based on player turn-out or relative numbers of male and female players. Lunch typically consists of roast chicken ($5 per player) with people bringing plate as well (e.g. salads, hot food, cakes or slices). In 2023 we have tried a few different catering options such as a soup day, cold meat day and will likely continue with a few similar days during the 2024 season.
2023 membership was over 70 players with a typical turn-out of between 40 and 50 players. A large number of our members are also members at another Legends club, in particular the South-West Club in Bunbury.
